要旨

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have been adopted as an educational tool in the last decade by developing countries, both in geography and related subjects in higher education. Particular to the case study in this paper, Viet Nam has experienced rapid growth both in student enrollment, and governmental funding for technology related disciplines. GIS is one such technology that has captured the interest of university administration and professors translating to its visible presence in the university curricula. However, the national and provincial governance of GIS education is less clear and is ill defined as universities operate autonomously. It is the objective of this paper to provide an overview of GIS education across three colleges in Vietnam National University -- Ho Chi Minh (VNU-HCMC) campus located in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam. This paper documents the state of GIS education and will attempt to suggest benchmarks for the development and evaluation of future GIS programs.
