要旨
Use of the Geographic Resource Analysis Support System, GRASS, has grown dramatically in recent years thanks in part to the growth of the Linux community and largely to a dedicated group of developers and integrators that unselfishly serve the growing user community. This "new" community is focused primarily outside of the United States where GRASS originally was developed and flourished. This document provides a glimpse into the earliest years of GRASS development, highlighting the similarities in the driving forces behind its development now and then.
